Lucknow Chikankari

Indra Link Global brings you the elegance of Lucknow’s famed Chikankari embroidery, known for its delicate, hand-embroidered designs. Each piece is crafted by skilled artisans, combining intricate patterns with soft, premium fabrics. This traditional art form from India appeals to fashion-forward consumers who value quality craftsmanship and unique textiles.

We work directly with Chikankari artisans to offer an exquisite collection that embodies cultural richness, tradition, and contemporary elegance. Each garment showcases the intricate detailing and artistry that have made Lucknow Chikankari highly sought after in fashion markets worldwide.

Bakhiya (Shadow Work)

Bakhiya is a signature Chikankari stitch known for its shadow effect, created by working on the reverse side of the fabric to produce a soft, elegant texture on the front.

Bakhiya is one of the most refined and widely recognized stitches in Chikankari embroidery. It involves stitching on the backside of a fine fabric such as muslin, cotton, or georgette, allowing the thread to subtly show through the front as a shadow-like fill. This technique gives motifs a delicate embossed appearance without heavy thread visibility.

There are two main variations:

  • Ulti Bakhiya (reverse shadow) – more common, done from the back
  • Sidhi Bakhiya (direct) – done on the front for a slightly raised look

This stitch is heavily used in luxury chikankari garments, especially sarees, kurtis, and dupattas.

Phanda (Knot Stitch)

Phanda is a knot-based stitch that creates small, raised dots resembling seeds, commonly used to highlight floral centers.

Phanda stitch is similar to French knots but denser and more compact. It adds texture, depth, and tactile richness to Chikankari embroidery. Typically used in the center of flowers or as decorative fillers, Phanda enhances the visual appeal by breaking the flatness of fabric with subtle elevations.

It is commonly seen in:

  • Floral motifs
  • Traditional ethnic wear
  • Mid to premium chikankari collections

Murri (Rice Grain Stitch)

Murri is a fine, elongated knot stitch that resembles rice grains, known for its precision and high craftsmanship value.

Murri is considered a more advanced and refined version of Phanda. Each stitch is carefully shaped to look like a tiny grain of rice, making it one of the most intricate stitches in Chikankari. It requires significant skill, precision, and patience, which is why it is often associated with premium and luxury garments.

Murri is widely used in:

  • Detailed floral work
  • Paisley (kairi) patterns
  • High-end export garments

Tepchi (Running Stitch)

Tepchi is a basic running stitch used to outline patterns and create the foundational structure of Chikankari embroidery.

Tepchi is the simplest yet essential stitch in Chikankari. It forms the base framework upon which more complex stitches like Bakhiya, Phanda, and Murri are added. Despite its simplicity, Tepchi contributes to the overall design by creating linear patterns, outlines, and light textures.

It is commonly used in:

  • Lightweight garments
  • Daily wear collections
  • Base pattern structuring
